I’m Not Photogenic: Why That Shouldn’t Stop You From Doing Boudoir
“I’m just not photogenic.”
It’s probably one of the most common things I hear from women considering a boudoir session.
Sometimes it comes out as a joke. Sometimes it’s said very seriously. Sometimes it’s the reason someone has been thinking about booking a session for months but still hasn’t done it.
But here’s the thing:
Being “photogenic” isn’t a requirement for boudoir photography.
You don’t need to already know how to pose. You don’t need to be comfortable in front of a camera. You don’t need to know what angles work for you.
That’s part of what the photographer is there for.
What Does “Photogenic” Even Mean?
Most people use “photogenic” to mean that someone naturally looks good in photos.
But photography isn’t quite that simple.
A photo depends on lighting, posing, camera angle, lens choice, expression, movement, styling and timing. Change one of those things and the same person can look completely different.
That means a bad photo of you doesn’t automatically mean you aren't photogenic.
It might just mean the photo wasn't doing you any favors.
And honestly, most of us have plenty of those.
You probably have at least one photo of yourself where you thought, “Why do I look like that?”
That doesn't mean that's what you actually look like.
It means someone took one photograph at one particular moment.
You Don't Have to Know How to Pose
One of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir is that you need to show up already knowing how to pose.
You don't.
A good boudoir session should involve direction.
You might be told where to put your hands, how to position your legs, where to turn your face or how to shift your weight. You may make small adjustments throughout the session that completely change how an image looks.
You don't have to memorize any of that beforehand.
You just have to be willing to listen, try things and let the photographer guide you.
If you're nervous about being in front of the camera for the first time, that's completely normal. You can also read more about turning first-time boudoir nerves into confidence.
Your First Few Photos Might Feel Awkward
This is something worth knowing before your session.
You may feel awkward at first.
You may not know what to do with your hands. You may feel like you're thinking about every part of your body. You may hear the camera clicking and wonder what the hell you look like.
That's okay.
You don't have to walk into the room feeling completely confident.
Most people need a little time to settle in.
That's why the beginning of a session isn't necessarily about getting the perfect photograph immediately. It's about getting comfortable with the process.
Once you're moving, talking and getting used to being photographed, things usually start to feel much more natural.
You Don't Need to Know Your “Good Side”
A lot of people have a particular side of their face or body that they prefer.
That's fine.
But you don't need to come into your session with a list of your best angles.
Your photographer can help figure out what works as you go.
Sometimes the photographs you end up loving aren't the poses or angles you expected.
That's part of the fun of seeing yourself differently.
Don't Compare Yourself to Photos Online
This one is especially important.
If you've been looking at boudoir photography online, you may have started comparing yourself to the women you're seeing.
You might be thinking:
“She's more confident than me.”
“Her body looks better than mine.”
“I could never look like that.”
But you're seeing the finished photograph.
You're not seeing the nervousness before the session. You're not seeing the direction during the shoot. You're not seeing the lighting being adjusted or the hundreds of photographs that weren't selected.
And you're definitely not seeing how that person felt about herself before she walked through the door.
Try not to use someone else's finished photograph as evidence that you can't have your own experience.
You Don't Have to Lose Weight First
This is another reason people put off boudoir.
“I want to lose a little weight first.”
“I'll book when I feel better about my body.”
“I just want to get in shape before I do it.”
If that's genuinely what you want for yourself, that's your decision.
But you don't have to earn the right to be photographed.
Your body doesn't have to reach some imaginary finish line before you deserve photographs of yourself.
Boudoir isn't reserved for one body type, one age or one version of a woman.
You can do it now.
What If You Hate Every Picture of Yourself?
If you're used to seeing yourself in everyday snapshots, phone photos or badly lit group pictures, you may have already decided that you don't photograph well.
But professional photography is different.
Lighting is intentional.
Posing is intentional.
Composition is intentional.
The photographer is paying attention to what the camera is actually seeing instead of simply pointing it at you and pressing the button.
That doesn't mean every photograph will be your favorite. It shouldn't.
The goal is to create a collection of images where you see yourself in ways you actually love.
You Don't Have to Feel Confident Before Your Session
This might be the biggest misconception of all.
You don't have to become confident first.
You can show up nervous.
You can show up unsure.
You can show up thinking, “I have no idea what I'm doing.”
That's okay.
Confidence doesn't always come before the experience.
Sometimes it comes from having the experience.
That's one reason boudoir can be so meaningful. You're not waiting until you feel completely comfortable with yourself to be photographed.
You're giving yourself the opportunity to see yourself differently.
The Photographer's Job Isn't Just to Take Pictures
A boudoir photographer should be doing more than operating a camera.
They should be watching how you're moving, paying attention to the light, giving you direction and helping you understand what to do next.
You shouldn't have to figure everything out yourself.
That includes knowing what to wear, how to prepare and what to expect from the experience.
If you're still figuring out what a boudoir session actually looks like from start to finish, the complete Michigan boudoir photography guide walks through the experience in more detail.
You Might Surprise Yourself
One of the best parts of boudoir is that you don't always know what you're going to see when you look at the photographs.
You may walk in thinking you're going to hate them.
Then you see one.
And you stop.
Not because you suddenly became a different person.
Because you're finally seeing yourself through a different lens.
Maybe you notice your eyes.
Maybe you like the way your body looks.
Maybe you like your expression.
Maybe you just think, “Damn. That's me?”
You don't have to know exactly what that moment will look like beforehand.
You just have to give yourself the chance to have it.
You Don't Have to Be Photogenic
You don't need to be naturally comfortable in front of a camera.
You don't need to know how to pose.
You don't need to have your body figured out.
You don't need to feel confident every second of the session.
You just need to show up.
The rest can be worked out along the way.
And if you're still nervous about whether boudoir is right for you, that's okay too. You can start with the complete Michigan boudoir photography guide to learn more about what the experience actually involves.
You might be more ready than you think.
