You Don’t Need to Be Ready. You Just Need to Show Up.
Michigan boudoir photography that meets you exactly where you are and shows you who you’ve always been.
Becoming Fire is a boudoir photography studio rooted in one belief: every woman deserves to see herself the way the people who love her already do. Whether you’re booking this for yourself, as a gift, or just because something inside you said it’s time, you’re in the right place.
This guide covers everything you need to know about the boudoir experience: what it is, how it works, how to prepare, and why it changes people. Read through at your own pace, or jump straight to booking when you’re ready.
What Is Boudoir Photography?
Boudoir photography is an intimate portrait experience — typically done in lingerie, loungewear, or whatever feels like *you* — that’s designed to be empowering, not exposing. The goal isn’t to make you look like someone else. It’s to capture the version of you that already exists and doesn’t get photographed nearly enough.
The word “boudoir” comes from the French word for a woman’s private dressing room or bedroom. But modern boudoir is less about the setting and more about the feeling: seen, celebrated, and unapologetically yourself.
Boudoir sessions aren’t just for a specific body type, age, relationship status, or occasion. They’re for women who are ready — or even just *curious* — to experience themselves differently. That’s it. That’s the whole requirement.
- Is boudoir photography just about looking sexy?
- Do I have to be in lingerie?
- Is this just for women in relationships?

What to Expect: The Boudoir Experience from Start to Finish
Most women walk in nervous. Almost all of them walk out feeling something they didn’t expect to feel.
That’s not an accident — it’s the result of a session experience that’s been designed specifically around you. Here’s what that actually looks like.
Before you arrive, we connect. You’ll fill out a style questionnaire, we’ll talk through your vision, your comfort level, and anything on your mind. No question is too small. By the time you walk through the door, you’ll know exactly what to expect.
When you arrive, the energy in the studio is calm, private, and intentional. There’s no rushing, no audience, no pressure to perform. This is your space for the day.
During the session, every pose, every angle, every frame is directed. You don’t need modeling experience. You don’t need to know what to do with your hands. That’s my job — and it’s one I take seriously. I’ll coach you through every moment so that the only thing you have to do is breathe and be present.
After the session, you’ll have a reveal appointment where you see your images for the first time. This is one of the most emotional parts of the whole experience — and one of the most powerful.
The transformation isn’t in the photos. It happens in the moment you see yourself and think: *that’s really me.*

How to Prepare for Your Boudoir Session
Preparation isn’t about being perfect. It’s about showing up feeling as good as possible so the session can do what it’s meant to do.
Start with your mindset.
The most important thing you can bring into this session isn’t a perfect body or a specific look — it’s permission. Permission to take up space, to be seen, to invest in yourself without needing a reason other than I wanted to. Give yourself that before you even walk in.
The week before your shoot:
Take care of your body the way you would for anything you care about. Stay hydrated, get solid sleep, and avoid anything that leaves you feeling bloated or run-down the day before. This isn’t about restriction — it’s about feeling your best.
The night before:
Lay out everything you’re bringing. Do a light skincare routine. Get to bed at a reasonable hour. Don’t overthink it.
The morning of:
Eat a real meal. Drink water. Give yourself more time than you think you need to get ready. Arrive relaxed — not rushed.
The more present and grounded you feel walking in, the more the session delivers. It really is that simple.

What to Wear for Your Boudoir Session
“What do I wear?” is the question I get more than any other — and the honest answer is: there’s no wrong answer.
Boudoir doesn’t require a specific look. What matters is that what you’re wearing makes *you* feel something. Confident, sexy, soft, powerful — whatever that version of yourself looks like, that’s what we build the session around.
The classics: Lingerie sets, bodysuits, corsets, lace — these are boudoir staples for a reason. They’re versatile, flattering, and photograph beautifully. You don’t need to spend a fortune. A well-chosen two-piece from ASOS photographs just as powerfully as high-end lingerie.
Wardrobe beyond lingerie: Oversized button-downs, silk robes, an oversized blazer with nothing underneath, a favorite band tee — these all make for stunning, editorial images that feel personal and real.
Nude/implied nude: Completely valid and completely handled with intention and taste. If this is on your mind, we’ll talk through it in your consultation.
Styling tips that actually matter:
Bring 3–5 outfit options and we’ll edit down together
Consider variety in coverage — mixing something sheer with something structured creates visual range
Shoes elevate almost everything (literally and aesthetically)
Bring pieces that mean something to you — sentimental items photograph with weight

Bridal Boudoir: A Gift They’ll Never Forget (Including to Yourself)
Bridal boudoir is one of the most meaningful things you can do in the season leading up to your wedding — and one of the most overlooked.
The idea is simple: book a boudoir session before your wedding, and either gift the album to your partner on your wedding morning, keep the images for yourself as a personal milestone, or both. Most brides end up doing both.
Why brides book boudoir:
A tangible, deeply personal wedding gift that doesn’t end up in a donation pile
A moment that’s entirely yours in a season that often feels like it belongs to everyone else
A way to mark this chapter — the version of yourself on the edge of something big
Images that hold up for decades
Timing matters. The sweet spot for booking is 3–6 months before your wedding date. This gives you time for your consultation, session, and album production without any last-minute pressure. If your date is sooner, reach out anyway — we can often make it work.
Bridal boudoir albums are designed as gifts: linen-covered, lay-flat printed, built to last. They’re not just photos — they’re something you hand over in a box on one of the most important mornings of your life.

On Nerves, Body Image & Why “Not Being Photogenic” Is a Myth
If you’ve made it to this section, there’s a good chance part of you is interested and another part of you is talking you out of it.
Maybe you’re thinking: *I’ll do it when I lose the weight. When I’m more toned. When I feel more confident.*
Here’s the thing — boudoir isn’t the reward you get after you feel good about yourself. For most women, it’s actually the thing that starts it.
The women who book sessions rarely feel “ready.” They feel the same mix of nerves and wanting-it that you’re feeling right now. And nearly every single one of them leaves with something they didn’t expect: a shift in the way they see themselves that doesn’t go away when the session ends.
“I’m not photogenic” is something I hear constantly, and I want to be direct with you: that’s not a you problem, that’s a photographer problem. Posing, light, direction — these are skills. My job is to use them on your behalf. You don’t have to show up photogenic. You just have to show up.
Body size, age, shape — none of it is a prerequisite. Boudoir is not a genre reserved for a specific category of woman. It never was.
The version of you that deserves to be photographed? She’s already here.

Printed Albums & Products — Because Screens Don’t Do It Justice
There’s a version of this where you leave with digital files, put them in a folder on your desktop, and slowly forget they exist.
That’s not the experience I want for you.
The images from your session deserve to exist somewhere you can actually *hold* them. Printed boudoir albums are the centerpiece of what Becoming Fire offers — and once you see one in person, you’ll understand why.
Lay-flat albums are handcrafted with linen or faux-leather covers, thick pages that lie completely flat when opened, and print quality that makes digital screens look like a rough draft. These are heirloom-level products.
Wall art is another option for clients who want a single statement image displayed in a personal space — a bedroom, a closet, wherever feels right.
Gifting formats are available for bridal clients and anyone giving their images as a gift — custom boxes, print sets, and album formats designed to be given, not just kept.
Your images were made to be seen. Let’s make sure they are.

Boudoir FAQs — Everything You Were Wondering But Didn’t Know How to Ask
Do I need modeling experience?
Not even slightly. Every pose is directed. You will never be left standing in the middle of a room wondering what to do with your hands. That’s my job, and it’s one I take seriously.
What if I’m nervous?
Good — that means you care about this. Almost every client walks in nervous and spends the first ten minutes wondering why they were. The session is designed to be gradual, low-pressure, and completely directed. You’ll settle in faster than you expect.
Who will see my photos?
Your images are yours. They are not shared, posted, or used without your explicit written consent. Privacy is not an afterthought here — it’s a foundation.
Do I have to be a certain age or size?
No. Boudoir is not age-restricted or size-restricted. If you’re a woman who wants this experience, you qualify.
What if I don’t like how I look in photos, usually?
That’s one of the most common things I hear — and one of the most reliably changed by the end of a session. Posing, lighting, and direction make an enormous difference. This isn’t a selfie. It’s a fully directed, professionally lit portrait session.
How long is the session?
The session starts with hair and makeup that takes roughly 1.5/ 2 hours and has a session run time of roughly 90 - 120 minutes.
Can I bring someone with me?
Absolutely! Please bring your most supportive cheerleader(s)!
